The USNS Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg is a 522 feet long former Missile Range Instrumentation Ship which was intentionally sunk on May 27th 2009 to create an artificial reef for divers, snorkelers, and fishermen. She sits intact and upright at a depth of 140 ft (46 m) seven miles off Key West The super structure begins at a depth of 40 ft (13 m), making this a wreck that can be enjoyed by divers of many levels of certification.
Built in 1943, the Vandenberg had a long and varied career. In addition to her duty as a missile tracking ship, she also served as a World War II troop transport and even had a starring role in the 1999 movie "Virus."
She was aquired by Artificial Reefs of the Keys in 1999 with the goal of sinking her off Key West.

Visit Artificial Reefs of the Keys for all kinds of information on the Vandenberg, including deckplans and Photos of ship interior taken before the sinking. The size and complexity of the Vandenberg will mean that divers will be able to make dozens of dives on the wreck and still not see it all.
NOTE: Due to the depth of the lower levels of the wreck, Advanced open Water (or higher) certification is recommended. If you plan to penetrate the wreck, BE ADVISED that wreck dive training is very strongly recommended (and proof of training may be required by charter dive operators.)
Looe Key Dive Center offers PADI training for Nitrox, Advanced Open Water and Wreck Dive certifications. We also have nitrox for sale and dive computers for rent so that you can safely extend your bottom time.
